On Saturday, parts of western and southern Alberta as well as eastern B.C. will experience storms throughout the day, bringing heavy rainfall, powerful gusts, and occasional small hail.

Alberta’s rainy long weekend

Throughout Alberta, persistent rainfall will span from Saturday through Monday, delivering varying degrees of coverage.

On Saturday, it will cover much of the province with a particular emphasis on central Alberta and areas near Calgary.

On Sunday, southern Alberta will see rainfall near the U.S. border, just below Calgary, with light snowfall expected at the most elevated points.

This will continue through to Monday, southwestern Alberta will have seen the heaviest rain around 20-40 mm, with Calgary seeing 10-20 mm.

Nevertheless, Calgary might lie just north of the continuous rainfall area, potentially decreasing the precipitation levels expected in the city as we approach Monday.

Although some precipitation has already been recorded in the area this month, additional rainfall would still be beneficial for the province. This is particularly true for southwestern Alberta, which remained the sole region experiencing severe drought conditions as of late April, according to the Canadian Drought Monitor.

Fingers crossed, the rainfall assists the southwestern regions in recovering from the drought; however, let’s avoid an excess to prevent potential flooding issues.
