Apple's Bizarre New iPhone Design Could Be Their 20th Anniversary Surprise, Report Suggests

Even though their specifications and features get an update annually, Apple's iPhones keep the same overall dimensions and design.

However, as per a recent report, the technology company is gearing up to introduce a groundbreaking design for one of its forthcoming devices.

According to Apple insider Mark Gurman, the billion-dollar technology firm is reportedly developing a 'curved, mostly glass iPhone'.

He asserts that the device will have "no cutouts in the display," like a notch at the top or a tiny hole for a frontal camera.

It will be released in a few years to commemorate two decades since the original iPhone became available for purchase – June 29, 2007.

'Towards the end of the year, an predominantly glass, curved structure was unveiled.' iPhone without any cutouts in the display is due to hit,' Gurman said in the latest issue of his Power On newsletter.

That will coincide with the 10-year anniversary of theiPhone X, which initiated the shift towards entirely screen-oriented, glass-centric iPhone models.

Apple is also preparing its initial folding phone — following in the path blazed by competitors Samsung, Huawei, and Motorola.

Mark Gurman suggests that 2027 will mark a 'significant year' for the introduction of new Apple products due to an upcoming 'renaissance in product development.'

"If everything proceeds as planned, Apple’s product roadmap will introduce several exciting new gadgets during that timeframe, coinciding with the iPhone’s 20th anniversary," he stated.

He stated that the 'absence of significant innovation' has led to a decline in iPhone sales, which are now lower compared to what they were two years prior.

Apart from the 'mostly glass, curved iPhone', Apple’s first foldable iPhone should be on the market by then.

Unlike several of its rivals such as Samsung, Huawei and Motorola, Apple is yet to release a foldable phone, although it's long been rumoured to be working on one.

The foldable iPhone device will be unique in that the typical foldable display crease will be 'nearly invisible', Gurman revealed.

Additionally, a set of intelligent spectacles akin to Meta's version of Ray-Ban glasses are expected to be accessible by 2027, he mentioned.

A further item billed as a blend of a foldable iPad equipped with a touch-screen Mac is also set for release but ‘probably won’t be available till 2028’.

An all-glass iPhone

Currently, the back of smartphones aren't put to good use. They're mostly used to house a few components like cameras and fingerprint sensors that don't take up much space.

Attaching a glass screen to the rear of an iPhone might effectively double the display area, all without altering the device’s dimensions or form factor.

The users of this device might be able to enjoy two distinct screens on the front and rear, or simply rotate it 360 degrees in their hands for a single screen oriented towards themselves.

Although the concept of a mostly glass smartphone might seem revolutionary, Apple has already submitted a patent for one. a fully glass smartphone featuring an uninterrupted screen that spans from the front, back, and edges .

Referred to as "a singular pane of glass," the patent illustrates a gadget featuring screens on its anterior and posterior sides, along with touch-sensitive controls embedded in its rounded borders.

The British designer Jony Ive, who was employed at Apple from 1992 until 2019, formerly discussed the idea of an entirely glass iPhone, referred to as "one piece of glass," as reported. Reports dating back to 2016 .

I was instrumental in developing several of the company’s most recognizable products, such as the iPod, iPhone, and more. iPad .

Business Insider Previously mentioned that large glass structures are quite an obsession for Ive, who was also involved in designing Apple’s campus in Cupertino, California.

Apple HQ is notable for enormous curved glass walls – some of the largest pieces of curved glass in the world.

Ive also designed the translucent case for the hugely successful iMac G3, released in 1998.

According to reports, he is currently developing a 'cutting-edge AI gadget' for OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.

Prior to the release of the predominantly glass iPhone, Apple plans to launch at least two additional devices: theiPhone 17 later in 2025 and the iPhone 18 in 2026.

It’s rumored that the iPhone 17 models will feature rectangular camera strips along the rear — a resemblance that has been pointed out by many fans Google's Pixel phones .

The "iPhone 17 Air" or "iPhone 17 Slim," one of the variants anticipated for release, will likely offer a more lightweight and slim design but come equipped with slightly reduced processing capabilities.

It is also said that Apple may be contemplating eliminating USB-C charging and offering headphone-free iPhones for sale in the near future.

MailOnline reached out to Apple for their input; however, the company typically refrains from commenting on any rumors or speculations.
