Blizzard Warning Hits Canada as Unofficial Start to Summer Begins

A fresh blizzard warning will be in place as we approach the extended weekend signaling the informal beginning of Canada’s summer season.

Severe snowfall and strong gusts led to a blizzard warning being issued for parts of Quebec, coming only days after a heatwave swept across sections of the region.

A blizzard warning has been issued with as much as 25 centimeters of snow anticipated.

The Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has released the blizzard warning For certain areas in Northern Quebec over this weekend, this will affect Kangiqsujuaq-Raglan Lake and Quaqtaq.

A strengthening low-pressure area close to Hudson Bay will move into the cold air trapped across the northern parts of the region. This weekend, severe winds coupled with significant snowfall may result in blizzard-like conditions from time to time.

"Quickly building snow will make traveling challenging. Visibility may drop to nearly nothing during intense snowfall and blizzard conditions," warned ECCC for the area.

Alerts come with the unofficial start of summer.

This is Canada’s fourth blizzard warning so far this month—and the third for this portion of northern Quebec since May 8. These northern communities combined are home to more than 1,000 people.
