Storm-Proof Your Long Weekend: Prepare for Disruptions in Ontario

If your dream involves clear blue skies during the Victoria Day long weekend, the weather might just decide otherwise.

A number of people in southern Ontario and the Greater Toronto Area probably experienced an early Friday morning lightshow accompanied by thunder as a warm front moved through the area, sparking overnight storms.

Fortunately, southern Ontario and the Greater Toronto Area will experience dry conditions within a warm air mass for the remainder of Friday, with temperatures rising above 20 degrees as the long weekend begins.

Additional storms are anticipated to develop Friday afternoon across eastern Ontario. As the system moves further northeast, it will ultimately shift into southern Quebec.

Saturday might seem like Groundhog Day.

An enhanced system is expected to arrive on Friday evening and continue through early Saturday morning, increasing the likelihood of severe weather in southwestern Ontario. Residents of the GTA might find themselves waking up with the impression it’s still Friday when the storms sweep into the region during the predawn hours on Saturday.

Intense winds and substantial hail continue to be the primary hazards associated with these storm systems, particularly affecting regions from Windsor through to the Kitchener-Waterloo area, where certain thunderstorms might escalate to severe levels.

A significant distinction is that the likelihood of thunderstorms on Saturday will cover a broader area compared to those on Friday because the stormy low pressure system will be positioned over the Great Lakes. This low-pressure center is anticipated to generate several episodes of intense rainfall and lightning-associated storms during the day.

By mid-afternoon, the chance of severe weather will move northwards, affecting cottage country and eastern Ontario regions.

The extended weekend might not entirely disappoint throughout the province since Sunday is expected to become drier—though overcast conditions and persistent unstable weather may still spoil the day.

Temperatures are anticipated to return to normal levels on Sunday and Monday, with projected highs in the middle to lower teens.

Nevertheless, forecasters advise those with outside activities planned for the weekend to stay informed about the weather conditions and be ready to make changes as needed.
